“Mr. Sandman”

It was the late 1930’s. John Bellody was picking up and selling natural brown sand from southern New Jersey and delivering it to the local mason supply companies.  One day while reading the paper in the late 1940's, he saw an article that changed his life. It mentioned the Lantern Hill Sand Company in Ledyard, Connecticut. John was surprised to learn of the existence of white sand mined in Connecticut. Recognizing an opportunity, he called the folks at Lantern Hill and offered to distribute their sand for plastering throughout New England. He gradually set up a home office on his front porch in East Hartford.  He was soon peddling white silica sand to mason supply houses and painters for plastering and sand finished ceilings.

John worked to meet the needs of his customers and by the time he formed New England Silica in 1949, the company had built a reputation for delivering quality products and dependable service.

In 1967, John’s son, Bob, went to work for his dad. Together, along with dedicated employees, they expanded the business into one of the top sellers of specialty sands and aggregates in New England.

Over the years, the New England Silica team has retained the same commitment to service John Bellody demonstrated on that front porch so many years ago.

New England Silica has been providing quality products and dependable service for 60 years.
